The Day of Photonics 2016 event
The day of photonics 2016 is an event held worldwide to raise awareness about photonics, it´s advantages and applications in our everyday lives. This bi-annual event involves companies, individuals, schools and organizations getting involved and holding activities on small and large scales related to photonics. The photonics day 2014 was a great success, and this year the event will be held in Brussels, Belgium. It will be exciting to see how the day of photonics will be represented this year.
What it involves?
The day involves mainly small scale events within companies, but flagship events are also encouraged which take part on a larger scale between various partners.
Activities take place in more than 30 countries and demonstrate the use of photonics in our day to day lives. The photonics technologies presented can include; LED, solar energy, photonics circuits, lasers, sensors, imaging, displays and so much more! With activities organized all over the world on a voluntary basis.
Applications of these technologies can include:
- Healthcare- such as medical imaging sensors
- Security- such as the use of photonics circuits in CCTV systems
- Agriculture- Lasers and imaging sensors mounted on planes as an example.
- Food- For example graphene detectors in fridges to monitor bacteria levels in food.
- Communication- Such as high speed fiber optic communication
- Transportation- Such as photonics based driver assistance systems
When and Where?
The day of photonics 2016 has been scheduled this year for the 21st October in Brussels, Belgium. More information can be found on the Day of Photonics event website.
Events and information from previous events
On October 21st 1983, the value of 299,792.458 km/s was adopted for the speed of light by the General Conference of Weights and Measures. The day of photonics 2016 organizes events in occasion of the anniversary of this, celebrating photonics all over the world.
The types of events organized can include:
- Companies organizing visits to schools to share information to students about their company
- Student chapters holding information sessions to their schools about photonics
- Companies organizing family days to invite children to discover their parents working environment
- Companies organizing internal meetings in which they discuss the role of photonics in their target markets
- Companies organizing open days to invite other companies to familiarize with their businesses.
The day of photonics 2014 was a great success. Photonics technologies are an up and coming emerging market; if you would like to have a look at new photonics technologies which are looking for technology transfer partners, then check out our open innovation platform.
